The Ishiguro-Waits Edition
On inspiration, Remains of the Day, and Ruby's Arms.
Louis here. I’ve always loved a story that author Kazuo Ishiguro tells about writing The Remains of the Day, the novel that would go on to win him the Booker Prize, and eventually help him secure the Nobel Prize, too.
Essentially, Ishiguro thought the manuscript was finished. Then, one night, he was listening to Tom Waits, and the song Ruby’s Arms came on. Per Ishiguro:
