Colin here. When something works well enough, it often becomes invisible and underappreciated: the light switch, the shipping container, the zipper.
The three-point safety belt sits near the top of the list. It hangs beside the seat, crosses the body, and feels like a natural feature of the car, rather than something a person designed. We mostly put them on by autopilot and muscle memory.
But there is a person behind it. In 1959, Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin developed the modern three-point belt, and on August 13 of that year, the company sold the first car fitted with one, a PV 544, to a customer in Sweden. The invention is credited with saving more than one million lives, and Volvo later opened the patent to every competitor, rather than charging for it.
Why is this interesting?
Patents normally protect an invention: we made this, so you get to pay us. Volvo, with a particular Swedish sense of civic good, saw the bigger picture. Its value got bigger and bigger as it spread, and every competitor that adopted the design made the invention more successful (and the automotive world much safer).
Bohlin had previously worked on ejector seats as part of Saab’s aviation division, including work on the J35 Draken. His job was to get a body out of a speeding plane as fast as possible. When he arrived at Volvo in 1958 as the company’s first dedicated safety engineer, that job inverted: keep the body in the car at all costs.
Bohlin saw that the crash forces needed to land on the pelvis and rib cage, the parts of the skeleton built to take load. His solution joined a lap belt to a diagonal shoulder strap, both anchored low beside the seat, meeting in a single buckle you could fasten quickly with one hand. Simple, geometrical, elegant.
Usage and adoption was initially the hard part. In the UK, three-point belts became mandatory equipment for all new cars from 1968. Drivers were only legally required to wear them in 1983. It took a while for people to realize it was often a question of life or death.
Most interestingly, in 1970, Volvo set up an accident research program, sending investigators to real-world crashes involving its own cars, and feeding the findings into the next model. The company called it the Circle of Life. Every new car and crash generated new data. That loop, more than the belt itself, explains Volvo’s longevity as a safety brand, something it has made core to its positioning and brand equity. The car was never actually declared safe, per se. It was just always safer than the last one, based on what reality had reported back.
Another Volvo safety story is that of Margit Engellau, an osteopathic nurse married to Volvo president Gunnar Engellau, who kept seeing whiplash injuries in her patients, and raised it at home. By 1970, headrests that protected from this rear-ending injury were standard in all Volvo cars.
Volvo is now developing a multi-adaptive belt that will adjust its response to the occupant, their position, and the crash unfolding. Bohlin’s belt treated every body as the same; the new one treats every crash as a fresh data point about this body. It took sixty-five years, but we’re now moving from geometry to biography. (CJN)
