Unwilling courtesy is a real social tax. The interesting part is who gets charged for it.

I can relate! I say thank you instinctively, even to the NYC bus driver when I depart the conveyance. I’ve recently had a graphics conflict with chatGPT and when it stopped and listened to my objections, it not only apologized, it actually explained how it would change its approach moving forward. I was touched. But you really moved me when you used the word comeuppance. I have loved that word since I saw Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons more than 50 years ago, and I’ve longed for it to make a comeback. Thank you for starting my day on this upbeat note!
