Ha! You're letting folks into the 'secret' world of vintage watch collecting! I do find it interesting that this comes and goes in waves. Looks like it's sort of back.

I’ve long been curious about when this trend started. My father, a trained watchmaker who was in the business for 60+ years, would shake his head disapprovingly when someone came into his store with a crudded up Rolex or Omega. “No way to treat a nice watch “, he would say. To this day, many years later, I can’t look at a tropical dial or similar damaged watch without hearing his words.
