The Zoo Weigh-In Edition
On weighing 10,000 animals in a single week.
Louis here. Yesterday was the first day of London Zoo’s week-long annual animal weigh-in.
Despite growing up in the city, I had no idea this existed. But here are the basic, delightful details:
More than 10,000 animals—from the smallest snail to the tallest giraffe—will be weighed over the next few days.
The information is then shared with institutions around the world, to increase understanding of endangered or threatened species.
The BBC has been providing live coverage of some sessions. Yesterday, excited reporters enjoyed Polly, the giant Galapagos tortoise, accidentally tipping the scales. (Attention-loving capybaras Kiwi and Gizmo were two other hits, as everyone waited for the Humboldt penguins headline act.)
Why is this interesting?
