Another way that I've thought about this is around dimension reduction and expansion. In some cases there are so many different ways to think about an issue that a 2x2 helps you reduce an issue down to 2 dimensions. In other cases, something that looks simple (say size of an opportunity) becomes more interesting if you include another dimension (say, growth rate).
