It goes in phases. Back in the 1960s it was an advertising free for all. Popular cartoon characters hawked cereal and pretty much every box had a toy surprise inside. I didn't care what tge cereal tasted like, I wanted the plastic scuba diver that got filled with baking soda. Captain Kangaroo sold Schwinn bikes and Crayola crayons. The high point was probably Soupy Sales famous gaff.

In the mid 1970s the government stepped in and regulated the advertising and tried to control the sugar content of breakfast cereals. For awhile honey flavoured stuff got a pass because it was "natural", but that didn't last long. It's interesting to see how these waves line up with political administrations.
