You're right that back pain, whatever it's cause, can cause serious problems for people and that it can also be hard to treat. I've personally seen amazing results for back and headache pain with a PEMF device. I can't even tell you how much this has helped.
I think I have chronic back pain because I carry too many pounds of flesh and too many years of total failure and miraculous success, and the scale that tips back and forth between those two extremes.
Noah - I recommend reading the Expectation Effect by David Robson which provides a lot of research and information on this topic - but also expands on how our expectations influence other areas of our life. Another great resource is any of the work of Alia Crum out of Stanford - particularly on the Nocebo effect.
