In the commodities era, we had amazing school lunches that reflected the ethnic makeup of the neighborhood. When they changed something in the mid-late 80's gone were the cabbage rolls and in were the chicken nugget things.

I did not eat school lunch growing up but I distinctly remember liking the taste of school lunch pizza. I suspect that the American cheese made the difference....

Public school in South during the 60/70’s saw lots of government cheese ... and oats and butter and sugar and peanut butter, etc. Cheese was a 4x4x12 block if memory serves. They made the best peanut butter cookies while others were using margarine. Commodities’ overproduction were “bought/subsidized” by USDA and redistributed to public entities and to citizens in need. In schools, some (better off) ate well while the commodities distribution to the needy recipients provided them meals.
