This is happening in Ireland over the past few years! We never had zip codes here, but the launch of Eircodes started in 2014 and has been rolling out slowly. It's still taken a lot to get people to adopt them, but actually I think the pandemic helped (much easier to put in an eircode when shopping online than try to reason through the best way to fill in an address, many of which aren't unique). We also had some great advertising (although no Mr. Zip unfortunately!) - this one comes to mind ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=580MmZIIh9I ) and I know there was another, which I can't find, that emphasised how much easier the emergency services will find you if you can just tell them your eircode.

I remember the invention of zip codes. Previously only large cities would have a zone number, usually only a single digit. Check the ads in magazines and comic books from before 1962 to see them. But in the early 1960's the Post Office headed a widespread campaign, that included prime time PSAs and TV programs like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeiQUDsz-gU. That video also gives you a good idea of what most television programs were like then, rather than the ones that are popularly shown. At the time ad campaigns like that seemed pretty normal, but it's hard to imagine televised promotions broadcast today that would be on par with this.
