We were in Isla Mujeres, Mexico- a neighbor to Cancun - when they decided to change the time zone from Central to Eastern. We heard from our neighbors that the government had decided that the tourism from ET was stronger, so they want to make the switch to ET to keep things easier for those travelers. I had no idea a city could just decide to make that change but apparently it’s possible! They announced a day when it would happen and thankfully our neighbors alerted us. Then at midnight clocks switched to Eastern and when we went to the airport the next day our flights were indeed on Eastern!
