When I was at Techstars, we actively used Voxer, which is exactly this. In the Pro version you get transcription too so you can read the message if in a place you can’t listen and quickly reply. Often we’d use it instead of or ahead of a call / meeting to align everyone on things or if a high priority event was queueing up.
On the personal side seems like no one wants to go first!
My group of friends who are spread out around the US (and sometimes the world) have been using Voxer daily for a few years - I was the one who introduced them to it (another friend introduced me) and it took a little bit of awkwardness to get used to it but now we all love it. It's definitely a lot easier to use than iOS voice messages. I actually wish we'd adopt it at work too - maybe I should suggest it.
